Morocco (September 2016)

Pliensbachian (Lower Jurassic, ~185 million years old) of the Atlas mountains.

In 2016 I joined a field-excursion to study (cyclic) outrcops from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Morocco. We also encountered some Palaeozoic rocks in the Sahara.

Marine sediments in the High Atlas. Probably deposited at ~500 m water depth. Beautiful cycles.
The weathering of these rocks reveals astronomically paced climate cycles
Scenery en route to the Sahara.

Ordovician-Silurian-Devonian of the Sahara.

Orthoceras fossil (extinct squid with shell)
